Superfruiter was established based on a technological breakthrough (patented) of the ARO (Agricultural Research Organization of Israel, part of the The Volcani Centre). The scientific team identified a gene in melons that enables seeds to be empty, non-fertile with no embryo, usually very small. This allows the plant to focus its energy on producing more fruits.
This trait hits two great goals: added value to the grower (higher yield), and to the consumer (personalization, convenience, less waste).
Fruit number is increased by FIVE and fruit size is decreased by ONE-THIRD, thus increasing the total yield by 60%. We use a traditional breeding method –
no GM or gene editing!
Superfruiter project has already begun to bear its first fruits in greenhouses and commercial farms in Europe with two lines of research: ‘personalized’ melons in Piel de Sapo and Yellow Canary, and ‘snack’ melons with edible peel.
